For the full story on how AbleGamers got started please visit our press FAQ [include this once we get that up]
Q. How does AbleGamers help the disability community?
A. AbleGamers proves expert reviews and information on video games and assistive technology aimed at helping individuals with disabilities make educated purchases. This includes keeping an up to date database of videogame titles reviewed specifically to assess the accessibility of each title.
Q. How does AbleGamers make videogames more accessible?
A. AbleGamers advocates to developers and videogame publishers on the best practices to make games as accessible as possible. AbleGamers developed a 50-page living document to assist developers in the process called Includification.
Q. What is Includification?
A. Includification is in accessibility movement and an answer to developers who recognize the importance of accessibility but need guidance. The award-winning game accessibility guidelines showcase best practices for developers to create video games that are as accessible as possible. Using a three-tiered system of good, better and best, Includification describes the most common problems faced in videogames by those with disabilities and how to make sure everyone can access their game.
Q. Do you take donations?
A. Absolutely. AbleGamers continually receives critical acclaim from the efforts of its all-volunteer staff, but we’ve only been able to get this far thanks to the generosity of people like you. To give the gift of a better quality of life, please visit our donation page. [link]
Q. How much of my money goes directly to disabled gamers?
A. We have one of the best ratios for charities with $0.92 of every dollar going directly to AbleGamers related projects.
Q. Can I donate in honor of our memory of someone?
A. Absolutely!
Q. Can I give to a specific program or to help fund a specific grant?
A. Absolutely. Just specify what area you would like your donations to go to (awareness raising, grants, research and development or specific project).
Q. I can’t afford a monetary donation. Are there other ways to help?
A. You bet. First, you can shop on Amazon through this link. Part of the proceeds will go to the AbleGamers foundation at no additional cost to you. Second, we’re always looking for volunteers to submit content, do game reviews and help set up fundraisers.
Q. I’m a streamer and I’d like to help the foundation. Do you guys support streaming?
A. Yes, we love streamers. If you want to be part of the AbleGamers stream team or you just want to put a link to the foundation or add a widget to collect donations why you stream, email streams@AbleGamers.com [is this the right address?]
Q. Will you be doing a round of grants soon?
A. Hopefully. We do grants as often as funding allows. If you’re in need of assistive technology and need assistance purchasing the items, keep an eye out for grants.
Q. I’m a writer/editor/reporter/blogger and I would like to write about the foundation. Do you do interviews or have a press kit?
A. Absolutely, we love to do interviews. Part of why the foundation exists is to raise awareness for gamers with disabilities. If you would like to speak to Mark Barlet, Steve Spohn or any of our staff members, please email press@AbleGamers.com.
Q. I don’t see XXXX game. How long until it will be reviewed?
A. We review games as quickly as we can. We often have to wait for review copies to be available and a reviewer to get free time to do so. If you would like to help do reviews or if you are a disabled gamer who needs a particular game reviewed, send an email to press@AbleGamers.com.
